ABSOLUTELY GRIPPING: SUMMER RACE EVENTS

Written by: Sue - 1st July 2017

Summer invites us to mix business with pleasure, to skewer commercial objectives with sun, delicious food, fine wines and champagne. Gathering at a traditional UK sporting event is an opportunity to bond with colleagues in a new, relaxing way or to reward commitment. For inspiration, we've compiled some Did You Know? racing facts.

Cheltenham Festival

The 'Cheltenham Roar' greets the first race of this event and describes the enormous noise generated by the enthusiastic crowd, encapsulating the unique atmosphere here. The festival originated in 1860 and is held each March in the heart of The Cotswolds at Cheltenham Racecourse.

Did You Know ...

* Cheltenham Festival is traditionally held in the week of St Patrick's day and is very popular with the Irish stables.

* 30 extra Ryanair flights operate during the festival to accommodate the Irish enthusiasts.

* 80,000 shuttle bus trips ferry people between the racecourse and the town centre.

* 62,000 people attend each day of the event.

* Racegoers here consume 45,000 afternoon teas.

Royal Ascot

More of a global event than Cheltenham, Royal Ascot took place this year between Tuesday 20 and Saturday 24 June. New for 2017 was the Village Enclosure - the first new enclosure here for 100 years.

7,000 punnets of berries

Ebor Festival York

One of the last major race meetings of the flat season, Ebor Festival takes place each August at York Racecourse, running this year from Wednesday 23 to Saturday 26 August.

Did You Know ...

* 360,000 racegoers visit York Racecourse on average each year.

* Horses raced at York during the days of the Emperor Severus in Roman times.

* Among illustrious visitors to this site is Pope John Paul II who conducted open air mass there in 1982.

* The Princess Royal rode a winner at York, achieving the Queen Mother's Cup on Insular in 1988.

Sweeping, versatile, dramatic and memorable, our UK stadiums are ideal backdrops for conferences, banquets, exhibitions and product launches year-round. Summer events opportunities are all the more imaginative: gather on a boat on the Thames, BBQ rugby pitch-side at Twickenham or dress like a duke for a day in a top hat. There are few experiences more special than to meet with clients and colleagues for a day at the races, to join in enjoying history, tradition and a quintessentially British style. "What a smashing, positively dashing spectacle" as the old song celebrates.
