MAKING THE MOST OF 'BLUE SPACE'

Written by: Calder - World of Travel - 24th May 2016

The health and stress-reducing benefits of living - and if possible working - near to 'green spaces' is well documented, but recently researchers in many fields are investing time and resources on 'blue space' to discern the benefits of spending time near rivers, lakes and sea.

Who doesn't enjoy a stroll on the beach?  I feel a ramble in the countryside is all the more enjoyable if you can walk alongside a river. You don't have to be a scientist or psychologist to appreciate the benefits of aquatic environments. It's a long-held belief that our connection to water is primitive and evolutionary - ancient civilisations felt that water was sacred and healing. Consider the Romans' love of a public bath, for instance. We've all read how the Victorians prescribed 'sea-air' for many mind and body ailments. Even in urban spaces, architects and planners are factoring in the uplifting virtues of a fountain, pond or canal outlook.

In the same spirit, meetings, special events and conferences at venues in a waterside spot - whether river, lake or sea - can provide a holistic experience for delegates.

Physical - evidence shows that spending time near water can have a stabilising effect on heart rate and blood pressure.

Mental Wellbeing - research reveals that humans generally find the colour blue induces calm, tranquillity and a more open feeling. The sound of water can also aid in this with many finding the gentle murmurings, the trickling of a stream or lapping of the waves a pleasant sensation.

Clarity - scientists explain the above by claiming that looking and listening to water simplifies life from both a visual and auditory perspective, filtering out the hubbub of everyday existence. A simplified environment aids clarity and concentration.

Creativity - greater clarity is good news for creativity and insight too!

Closer Connection - research has found we experience a greater connection when contemplating matters waterside: with ourselves, with the world around us and with those we encounter at the time. This enhances a co-operative spirit and teambuilding.

In short, spending time by the water doesn't mean our brains switch off, just that they switch mode to another level. This could be precisely when the heavens open and the 'light bulb' moments descend.

Many of our partner venues spring to mind when letting the imagination wander amidst amazing landscapes.

Laura Ashley The Belsfield Hotel situated in Bowness on the Eastern shore of Lake Windermere boasts exceptional waterside views. This distinctive boutique hotel also benefits from six acres of beautiful landscaped gardens - perfect for a meander and a think.  Even the most stress-fogged brain would begin to feel inspired here.

Don't disregard the city either. Stunning views over the Thames and Tower Bridge are a possibility for delegates meeting or on conference at The Tower Hotel, London with Guoman Hotels and, for delegates visiting the north, Radisson BLU Hotel, Durham is situated on the banks of the River Wear along the popular Durham Riverside in this vibrant, yet historic town.

Watch this space too, for a fourth venue to be introduced this year by our partner Warwick Conferences in an appealing lakefront location sheltered by trees and landscaping.

If sea-air is what the doctor orders, the Park Inn by Radisson Southend-on-Sea overlooks the Thames Estuary, with memorable views of the seaside resort town. The majority of meeting facilities here present views of the Estuary and are well positioned for a natural lit environment.  Another client favourite is St David's Hotel & Spa by Principal Hayley Hotels set in the heart of Cardiff Bay - the only five star hotel in Cardiff!

There are so many venues from our partner portfolios that we can recommend if a 'blue space' setting should appeal. These ideas are but a drop in the Ocean.  More inspiration is just a phone call away.
