GATHER AT THE WORLD'S OLDEST MARRIOTT
No detriment to being dubbed the world's oldest Marriott Hotel when this title combines with boasting an impressive full-service business centre. Breadsall Priory, Derbyshire holds this honour, dating back to 1266.
An ancient architectural arch within the hotel is a link to its monastic past, when a small group of canons would house there on visits to the resident prior from the Augustan order. It's still a special place in which to gather and I'm sure conveys much of its former peace and tranquility, tucked away within 300 spellbinding acres. Eight spaces here - of different character - suit the full range of corporate purposes, from small meetings to landmark events with a capacity up to 140.
As you make the mile-long approach through the grounds, there is a sense of rolling back the years and connecting to another time; a simpler time when this was a centre of peace and reflection as a priory under the care of local Lords of the Manor the Curzon family for eight generations. The building later became a private home and, in 1802, to the grandfather of famous naturalist Charles Darwin - the physician and poet Erasmus Darwin.
With the distinctive sandstone exterior and refined, muted elegance of the interior décor, visitors remark on how the history and heritage is beautifully maintained. Guests have a choice of period rooms or to overnight in a more contemporary wing.
