TEN POINTS ON THE ELIZABETH LINE JOURNEY

Written by: Sue - 31st August 2017

The Crossrail Project team is working around the clock to deliver Elizabeth Line, the new railway for London and the South East to open in stages from December 2018. Here we compile 10 points of interest on this massive undertaking.

1  Crossrail will measure 73 miles in length including 26 miles of new tunnels and existing mainline railways.

2  The line will feature 40 stations in total, including 10 new stations and 10 upgrades to existing stations.

3  Ten percent will be added to London's tube network, speeding journeys east to west across the city.

4  The Elizabeth Line will serve all terminals at Heathrow Airport - including Terminal 5 - from December 2019. Around twenty minutes should be slashed from the time it takes to reach Heathrow from central London. For instance, it is estimated that the journey from Bond Street to Terminal 5 will be cut to just 27 minutes.

5  The first of the new trains built for the project has entered service on the TfL Rail route between Liverpool Street to Shenfield. As new trains roll out of production they will be gradually introduced into service on the network.

6  When fully completed, high frequency trains will connect towns in Berkshire and Buckinghamshire to Essex and South East London via the centre of the capital.

7  From west to east, the tube interchanges will be Heathrow, Ealing Broadway, Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street, Whitechapel, Stratford and Canary Wharf.

8  Most trains will run above ground but a 13-mile stretch of line will be beneath the city. The line will be run by London Underground but trains are promised to be modern, spacious and air-conditioned.

9  Elizabeth Line will appear on the underground map as the purple and white line and as an orange and white line on the overground.

10 The Crossrail Art Foundation is working with the City of London Corporation and leading galleries to offer public art installations at seven of the central stations.
